Like l know you do a lot of charting and patient care but what else? I am interested in going to college for next year for nursing and wanna know what I am getting into thank you =).

its suggested when a new grad gets out of school to work on a med surg floor. heres what a day on a med surg floor can consists of.

your day starts by u getting report. at the end of gettin report youre like damn ''i got 10 patients to take care of''. (it could be more or less depending on facility). when u go greet ur patients 2 wants pain meds, 2 wants there breakfast now (when breakfast comes in another hour but they cant wait), 2 needs ice chips, 2 wants to see the doctor now, 1 needs to be changed & the other wants u to leave them the hell alone. u try to delegate responsibility to a PCA, PCT, NA (each facility calls nursing assistant a different title) but u cant find them. eventually when u do find one, u get an attitude. about an hour have passed & u havent even done ur med check. u start administering meds but u have to stop half way inbetween to go assess the pt whos complaining of chest pain. u follow the facility protocol, do ur ekg, dry labs, get them on some O2 & try to call the doctor. u page the doctor like 3 times before they eventually answer you, only to tell you, ''that not my pt, call beeper #12345 instead. ur pt is ok & u go back to giving meds. crap im running behind but l manage to finish giving meds. 1 pt needs a blood transfusion, he/she is demented so they will not understand any tranfusion reaction instructions u give them so u really really really have to monitor them. how r u gonna do this with 10 pts, u just have to. u finally get to use the restroom after holding ur pee for the past 3 hours. u munch on the cookies u have in ur pocket for some energy cause youve got so much work to do, forget about taking lunch. u havent even done the computer work or paper charting yet.

im not trying to scare u or anything but it can really get crazy some days. most days arent like that but when it gets crazy, it gets crazy. ur patients r ur priority. & some families can be really nice & other really nasty. just like some doctors r a joy to work with & other r nasty.

if u really want to be a nurse then go for. if the hospital thing isnt for you, try a doctors office, clinic, or visiting nurse
